End of Third Week in Sao Paulo

Weather is wonderful, warm feet but no AC needed for me. I’m in Sao Paulo and finishing off my third week here. I have moved every week and ready to move again Saturday. The schools are wonderful with so many caring teachers. I really enjoy working with them. Last Thursday I went out with some friends to Bourbon Street a club with the New Orleans’s theme. A great evening but going to bed at 2 and waking up again at 5:30 is rough, then staying alert all the next day takes effort and no sitting for long. That weekend I went on Saturday with another friend to the beach at Riveria De Laurenzo. A beautiful beach, the water was lovely even if it was raining. The drive there was through a mountain with a beautiful rain forest with trees with so many colours of flowers and so many types of foliage. Still didn’t see a monkey!  On Sunday I took the subway and explored Liberdade the Oriental sector and went to the market there.  I also saw a huge, huge cathedral in that area. The metro is a great way to get around.
 I’m in a new area, moved from near Paulista to Pacaembu. Pacembu is a nice area with high buildings but still some lower level homes. The school here is an old Spanish house and is beautiful Wish I could have seen it furnished as a house. My hotel is a residence hotel with flats, it is 24 stories I think. Tuesday I came down with food poisoning. Felt quite yucky for 24 hours but I’m as good as new today (Thursday).
Saturday I fly out to Rio and spend a week there at a school very close to the beach, I’m holing I can walk the beach to school. They say it is an excellent area. Then the next week its off to the North and Campina Grande.

Republica Market, Sao Paulo

-->
Sunday I had a chance to explore Sao Paulo and look for some Markets. I walked to the Anna Rosa metro station and took the train to a market that sold Peruvian hand crafts but they were all too bulky. I’ll be flying domestic to two schools and the baggage allowance is much less than from Toronto. I took the metro to Republica Square where there is a big market. I did some Xmas shopping (2015) and bought some cut and uncut stones. The subway is quite easy to negotiate and can cover a lot of territory. (My tracker said I walked 8 km). Sao Paulo is a huge city.
They sell so many crafts and interesting items at the markets. Breakfast at the hotel is very good and last night I ate at the restaurant from the menu. Tonight I was so hungry since breakfast was my last bite of food and I avoid street food unless it’s deep-fried. I had a nice surprise. They serve a buffet every night but Saturday, and it was so good. Monday, was my first day at Chacara Klabin school, another great group of people and cute kids. Today was the first day of ballet lessons after school, the little girls in pink ballet suits are so cute.
I just have to say it again ……it is so wonderful to have a local phone here. I can text local and always have a map.

My schools in Sao Paulo this Feb-March

My whole route Feb-Mar and May
-->
Friday was my last day at Alto De Pimheiros, it was a great week which flew by so quickly. Wonderful people. Today Saturday a taxi was scheduled to come pick me up at 12 noon. Well I waited till 1:00 and when there was still no sign of the taxi I asked the hotel to find me another. It was about a 25 minute drive through Sao Paulo. I arrived at my new hotel, Nova Comfort Paulista, in other words a comfort Inn. Wondering about Monday when the same taxi company is scheduled to pick me up in the morning. I’ll give them 10 minutes then get my own taxi.  The hotel is fine, not the Sheraton, but clean, smells Ok, has a safe for valuables, fast internet and has a nice restaurant.
I’m so glad to have a Brazil SIM card. I could follow my taxi route and speak through the translator when needed. I finished my report for my last school so tomorrow is free. This is my second Sao Paulo school, one more here, then it’s off to Rio for a week then way up to Campina Grande.  In May I’ll be three weeks in Sao Paulo and the last week waaaay over in Rio Branco in the West. See maps, the Sao Paulo map shows my 3 schools this time and the next map shows the whole two trips including Campina Grande school and the Rio Branco school.

Saturday evening my flight left Toronto about 1:00 AM in the morning. We arrived in Sao Paulo about 2 the next afternoon. It’s about a 10 hour flight. Luckily the middle seat in my row was empty and that gave me more leg room.  AC flight between Brazil and Canada have a generous baggage allowance, we can take the usual carry one and personal item as well as two 32 kg bags. I loaded my bags to the 32 kg mark and a friend bought the cost of another 32 kg bag. I loaded them with Value Village children’s books and dollar store items to help me with sample lessons.
I’m a big girl now, so I get my own taxi from the airport to the hotel. After arriving at my Pinheiros area L’Opera Hotel, I unpacked my friend and her family took me to the El Dorado Mall which is close by and she helped me get a SIM card for my unlocked iPhone. They also took me for supper. I now can call, but most important I can access the internet. With my ‘Say Hi’ translator app I can converse and make myself understood much easily than before. I can also know where I am and not get lost. This morning when I was on the way to school in a taxi, the driver must have forgotten the number and was going slow looking for the school. I was able to tell him with my phone, “It’s at the top of the hill”.
Sunday I met another friend and we went to her house and then went out for supper at Empanadas Caminito, an Argentinian restaurant. It was a great birthday weekend.
Monday, work started again, but with familiar people. I was at Alto de Pinheiros last year and was glad to see them again. Mainly what I do is observe classes and then talk about the good things I see and what can be improved. I also read Robert Munch stories to the every place I go.
The weather here is very nice, get this, I don’t need a sweater. It poured rain (torrentially as usual) and the thunder banged and shook the place. The kids and teachers didn’t bat an eye. No running around with Holy Water.
The children eat at the cafeteria, we could take a lesson from it. The food is very good made from scratch, with no refined junk….and the kids eat it and like it. Every day there is rice and beans or lentils, a salad, 2 vegetables and meat or fish. Yesterday was a delicious curry chicken and today a baked fish. To drink they had water and juice without sugar.
The school is a former beauty salon and is quite nice. It sure has more electrical outlets than usual.
As I write the Pentecostals across the street are praying and singing up a storm.  I’ll be here till Saturday then I move on to my next hotel- Comfort Nova Paulista and school - Chácara Klabin.

Hello Valinhos

-->
It was a wonderful two weeks at Jundiai. As in the school before, very personable staff and administration, who were not only very kind to me but to each other and to the children. At Jundiai I was able to test a lot of students and teachers for the Irlen Syndrome. Found a high incidence….especially in teachers.
One teacher was able to read and comprehend so much more and is headache free for the first time in years. All she did was, when she reads/studies she uses the blue Irlen overlay. www.irlen.com
With the help of teachers I was able to experience a taste of the ‘real’ Brazil. We went out to listen to bands at 2 clubs. Both were very tasteful events with patrons behaving very well. No evidence of intoxication or bad behavior, but with tight, well controlled security. Both bands were awesome and to my surprise, most songs were in English.
Went out for supper with the owner and principal, committed educators and great people.
My hotel was walking distance from the school, just a 7 minute walk, no hills. Every day, saw the same dogs, roosters, flowers and watched the papayas ripening on the tree in a yard. The bottom one was ready to be picked when I left. I felt like reaching over and grabbing it.
The hotel food was a feast everyday, breakfast had an awesome array of pastries, bread, sweets, meat, cheese, fruit and eggs. Lunch at school was also excellent and then another party spread at the hotel for supper. Had to be careful or I’d need two seats on the plane to get home.
I brought my moose, bear, eagle and wolf puppets and used them a lot to talk to the children. I also took about 15 Robert Munch books and the kids were spell-bound when I read them. Enjoying the part of school that I loved...without long term responsibilities.
Packed up Saturday morning and was picked up by Alexandra from Valinhos. Went to lunch on Saturday with her and then I went walking. I found my way to school, .75 km as the crow flies. It’s down one steep hill, cross a bridge and then up another steep hill. A very nice small city, most of the sidewalks are paved with flagstones and a lot of the side streets with cobblestones. The roads are like roller coasters, up and down the hills, one after another. A great place for walking and I’ve put on a lot of kms despite the fact I kicked my closet door by mistake about 2 weeks ago and can still only wear Birkenstock sandals.
Today Sunday, I had breakfast in the hotel, pretty much the same as the other hotels and Thias called me and I went with her to her riding lesson. I wandered allover the place for an hour. Amazing place, makes me want to get a tiller out and start planting.  Beautiful horses, lush vegetation, flowers every where, Guinea hens and chickens all over and all kinds of birds. Saw two big parrots and lots of eagles soaring in the sky. The trees are loaded with every colour of flower. I do believe this must be the garden of Eden. I even saw a pomegranate tree in someone’s yard on the way to school.
Had lunch Sunday afternoon with Thias and Alexandra from Maple Bear.
